This specialized course will teach the basics of concussion management from a primary eye care setting and provide optometrists with essential knowledge and skills to effectively manage concussions and their visual sequelae from the primary care chair. This course provides a general framework for how to recognize the symptoms, provide appropriate treatment options and when to refer for Optometric Visual Rehabilitation/VT.
Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
Identify the common signs and symptoms of concussions, including those related to visual dysfunction, to facilitate early detection in patients
Acquire the skills necessary to conduct a clinical evaluation of patients with concussions, focusing on assessing visual function, ocular motor control, and visual processing
Understand the importance of collaborating with other healthcare professionals in the treatment of patients with concussions.
Formulate effective treatment and rehabilitation plans for patients with concussion-related visual impairments, including the use of therapeutic lenses, tins and prisms, as well as vision therapy and co-management with other health care professionals
Feel secure in communicating with patients who have experienced concussions, providing them with clear explanations of their visual issues and treatment options to enhance patient compliance and understanding
