This lecture focuses on the differential diagnosis of unilateral and bilateral optic disc edema. Attendees will learn to recognize various etiologies of optic disc edema using illness scripts, which consist of typical epidemiology, time course, and clinical presentation of each condition. Emphasis will be placed on practical management strategies and appropriate referral pathways. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making in optometric practice.
Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
Identify the typical and atypical causes for optic disc edema using patient demographics, symptoms, and clinical characteristics
Order appropriate neuroimaging studies for optic disc edema and interpret the results to identify various underlying causes
Interpret in-office imaging to differentiate different causes of optic disc edema
Recognize the most common symptoms associated with diseases that cause optic disc edema, enabling them to ask targeted questions during patient evaluations
Monitor and/or treat cases of typical optic edema that are within their scope of practice
Facilitate appropriate referrals for specialty care in cases of atypical or vision-threatening optic disc edema
