Dr. Kathy Weise is from Denver, Iowa. She earned her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University and her doctorate of optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry. In 1995, Dr. Weise began her residency in family practice with emphasis in pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She joined the faculty in 1996 and became a Professor in 2015. In 2004, Dr. Weise earned her MBA from the UAB School of Business and also became the UAB Pediatric Optometry Service Director. Notable awards include a 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2019 Sight Savers America Hall W. Thompson Hero for Sight Award to honor individuals or organizations whose impact on children’s eye care in the state of Alabama has been both lasting and profound in March 2019. Dr. Weise has enjoyed serving children locally while researching myopia, strabismus and amblyopia, sports medicine, and concussion nationally. She was elected to serve as Netowrk Co-Chair for the NIH'sPediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group from 2024-2028. She was also elected to serve on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine “Focus on Myopia-Pathogenesis and Rising Incidence” consensus study committee in 2023, the AOA Sports Vision and Performance committee in 2020, and the Peer Review Panel for the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs for Traumatic Brain Injury in 2020 and 2021. Locally, Dr. Weise spearheaded the UAB Eye Care mTBEye Clinic and also created BlazerVision, a deliberately collaborative effort between optometry and ophthalmology to support UAB athletes. She is often seen at UAB athletic events with her husband and three children shouting, “Go Blazers!"
