Safal Khanal, OD, PhD, FAAO is a clinician scientist and assistant professor in the Department of Optometry and Vision Science at UAB where he leads an independent laboratory focused on basic, clinical, and translational myopia research, teaches professional and graduate students, and runs the UAB Eye Care Visual Electrodiagnostic specialty clinic. Dr. Khanal received his clinical training in Nepal and the Philippines and graduated with Bachelor and Doctor of Optometry degrees. After working in private and hospital practices, Dr. Khanal moved to the University of Auckland where he completed his Ph.D. and postdoctoral fellowship studying human myopia before joining UAB for his second postdoctoral fellowship on animal models of myopia. Dr. Khanal has published 35+ peer-reviewed original research papers and 15+ editor-reviewed articles in prestigious journals and magazines in the field. Previously, he contributed as the lead author of the myopia treatment commissioned paper for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s consensus study and an invited expert author for the British Contact Lens Association CLEAR presbyopia and International Myopia Institute Myopia white papers. He serves on the editorial board of the Scientific Reports and Frontiers in Neuroscience journals, AAO, ARVO, and ASCO scientific committees, and as an ad-hoc reviewer for 10+ leading journals in the field. Dr. Khanal’s works have been supported by federal, industry, and non-profit foundation grants and received national and international recognitions, including Borish Award, AAO Fellowship, AAO Career Development Award, Eberhard Dodt Award, and AEVR Emerging Vision Scientist. He regularly participates in scholarly activities nationally and internationally and speaks on topics related to emmetropization, refractive development, myopia onset, progression, and treatment, and visual electrophysiology.
